A New A-Eye for Soical Media

You probably have heard it before, and it is true. Many employers tend to explore social media accounts of potential candidates. According to a CareerBuilder survey, 70 percent of employers check social media accounts of their candidates. Depending on what you post, this could either help or harm you.
According to this article, some employers are going further and having new AI software scan social media accounts. That is correct. An AI software could trash your resume before the employer even knows it exists. Is this fair? From an employer perspective, I can see how this could be very helpful. Screening multiple social media profiles can take some time, and you may miss some things if you do it yourself. As a job seeker, I can see how it could become unfair. AI is new technology, and it does not have morals. It could also malfunction. I would hate to lose a job opportunity because a robot read my post the wrong way. If the program was proven to work perfectly, I would change my mind but for now, I do not trust this technology.

Whether an employer uses AI or not, it is best to be cautious of what you post. Luckily, this article provides some tips after this warning! Here is some information I find helpful:

·       Of course, avoid sharing anything provocative, inappropriate and discriminatory.

·       Do not be a cyber bully or bigot. If you are causing drama online, employers don’t want you causing drama at their work. You will not appear as a pleasant person.

·       Go through your accounts and clean up bad posts. It is okay to do so, and it could help you in the future.

·       Watch your language. Inappropriate language could also appear negative.

·       You can use AI to improve your social media appearance. This could be helpful but if you really need this, you might as well erase the whole account and start over!

·       Some of your social media content can help you get hired! The CareerBuilder survey found 44 percent of employers found content on social media which supported making a hire.

·       Who you are is more important than what you know. The article states, “among 2,600 hiring managers and HR professionals, 71 percent said they valued emotional intelligence over IQ overall.”

When you apply for a job, you want to make sure you look your best during the interview and outside the interview. Social media can be an important influence on the employer’s decision. With advanced AI technology, you never know what could be dug up. Therefore, it is important to be cautious when using social media. One wrong post could harm your future career.

  1. This just boggles my mind. Technology has come so much further than I ever could have imagined. A robot has the ability to look at your resume and delete it before an employer has the ability to look at it?! That sounds like a science fiction novel. I definitely agree with you though. I can see the benefits of AIs with both an employer and disadvantages for potential candidates. It all seems banana pants.
