Customization is Key

The first step to enter into the world of social media is to create a profile. Overall, it seems simple. You enter your first name, last name, email address, username and then you are done. Sure, creating a profile is easy, but creating a professional and successful profile takes work. What I recently learned from Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick in their book “The Art of Social Media” is that there are many details that can easily be overlooked when creating a profile. A lot of these details contribute to customization. Before, I never realized the importance of the customization of your social media profiles. I thought that once your name was on the page, it was good. Kawasaki and Fitzpatrick basically stress how customizing your profile is key to making yourself appear unique and competent and I agree. If every person on Facebook had no information or pictures on their profile, what would be the point? Who would want to view their profile with nothing to engage in? It is important to show your individuality through your profile. Show the world that you are a unique individual who deserves attention. Also, by sharing more information, I believe it helps gain the viewers trust and adds to your credibility. Sharing information about yourself in your bio gives the viewers a chance to learn a little bit about who you are without having to troll your account. You become less of a stranger which makes you more likable. So, before you leave that default profile picture or cover photo, invest some time in customizing your profile. Some little details can make a huge difference in your profile's success.

  1. Hi Crystal! I also never realized exactly how important your profile can be for social media. As young kids, we think we know everything there is about social media, but there is actually a lot I don't know. After reading through some of these same chapters, I need to go through my social medias and do a lot of updating! In my personal opinion, the majority of our generation doesn't want to share that much information because it makes us seem "cool" or mysterious" or "we don't want to try to hard." But in reality, your social media profile can make a huge difference in your professional life. Can' wait to discuss more about this book and see your takes on it.

  2. Hi Crystal,
I agree that the customization of your profile is a key concept when creating a profile on social media. It would be kind of counter productive to have profiles be exactly the same as every other. The best way to show people who you are is to make your profile exactly as you want it to look. However, I tend to be more cautions about things such as profile biographies and pictures. There are some who would use information that you put in these places to attempt to get a rise out of the owner of the profile.
